Jam – 2009-08-25 – Carroll’s

August 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

IMG_0214Tuesday night at Carroll’s, Nine Inch Nails were playing next door so we had to park on 54th instead of 55th. No big deal, Kevy risked parking in the tow-away-zone and got away with it.

It was a night were we had no guests yet we seemed to have to have two of our favorites, Coffee and Trister. They were there for most of the night and it was great to play with them. Trister was there last week, if you read, but I missed it due to car troubles.  Additionally, Coffee Boy bailed on last week so this week was like a reunion jam for all of us.  Quite a bit of fun.  I was gloating about my new pickup truck to replace my old Jetta.  Take a Look.

IMG_0200We played well, some great solid grooves and the feeling was positive for the most part.  I warned Andy about going for the Big River but he didn’t listen.  Somehow we made it through the whole thing.  In the same vein, we were using the iPhone with shuffle to select random songs for us to play.  We didn’t listen totally to it but it did provide us some good suggestions.   What it does do is let us listen to a sample of the song before playing it and what you realize, with examples like the Big River is how many songs we play at a molasses pace and how hard it is to play at a pace and liveliness that ironically is the Grateful Dead.  Something to seriously understand and work on.  The random song selector got us to play What a Wonderful World, which everyone knows I’m a sucker for.  I got us to play a Garband Masterpiece with Andy singing.  Likewise, it got us to play a really nice You Never Can Tell.  So the random song selector impacted the night but did not dominate it.

After both Andy and then Coffee left we played a good 4 or five more songs, primarily based on the random song selector.  After starting the late night Core-4 we played the How Sweet It Is and then the iPhone got us to play a Birdsong, Victim Dear Mr. Fantasy.  We were done at 12:00 midnight but due to tunnel traffic I didn’t get home until 1:30.  I was a little tired this morning but still enjoying the thrill of last night.  Until we jam again. That’s what she said.

    Jam – 2009-06-24 – Carroll’s

    Band of ConeFreaks

    Band of ConeFreaks

We were playing Wednesday this week which meant we had access to both Andy and Coffee so we were able to enjoy their company for a little while.   Being they live the furthest and don’t have the stamina of the rest of use meant the two of them were out of there shortly after 10:00 leaving Kevin, Scott, Rich and I to finish out the night in classic Core-4 fashion.  No big deal, that’s what we do, but Scott did go down quickly by 11:30.  It was a a fun Deadstein night though, as most are.

IMG_3251_edited-1When we arrived at 55th Street the club next door was having and show which meant parking was more difficult that usual.  I parked a block away, but on 55th. Kevin parked in the newly illegal spot across the street but got by.  Kevin was the first on there  and the rest of us arrived simultaneously to great Kevin who was hanging out with Chris the cool Carroll’s manager.

From second one you could tell this was going to be a loud night and the PA and the PZM in the piano was having trouble dealing with it.  The othernon-PZM piano microphone is definately better in both feedback rejection and lack of “uch”.  I was also rationing the access to the PA by only having the mics that were to be used in that song on.  This helped a lot  and enabled me to boost the channel of the primary singer.

IMG_3240_edited-1With respect to guests, Stu was there looking dapper in his lawyer outfit and he was cool to take pictures of us in action.  Check out his cool pose to the right. Ken Levine was there still buzzing from the excitement of last week.  Finally, Scott Bayer also showed, blowing his harmonica, getting us to call Carol to play to her over the cell phone and asking Stu for civil law advice while Stu claimed ignorance to knowing there were actually laws that controlled the civil world.  Nevertheless, talking to Scott Bayer is always an adventure.

A day later, trying to remeber songs is tough but I’ll try.  I recall a Brown-Eyed Women, Big Boss Man, we didn’t play Lied and Cheated.  Trister ended his night with a Brokedown played a full step higher than we traditionally play it (eighties style) and that f-up Kevy a bit.   End of the night Core-4 included Run for the Roses, Simple Twist of Fate, Harder They Come.

Below is the setlist from thenight as well as the links to the MP3 recordings thanks to the fforts of Rich and his recorder.

In the world Ed McMann died, Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson all just died. There were beautiful rain clouds and splatters of sunshine all over on the way in though it never rained on me.

    Jam – 2009-05-27 – Carroll’s

DCC_6344_edited-1It was Wednesday night and Scott informed us several weeks ago that he would not be able to make this weeks jam. He is in Anguilla on vacation and I’m sure the Patron is moving from the bar to his liver as a fast pace.

This gave us the opportunity to have Coffee-Boy and Trister join us for what is almost a Terez reunion but without Terez. We knew we would only have Trister for a portion of the night but we had to make the most of it that we could. We opened with a standard Trister night opening of the Halfstep followed by a Brother Esau. Coffee was giving us some serious cowbell during the Esau. Birdsong followed and was really nice and the rest of the night continued in a very positive manner.

Short of Coffee and Trister being considered guests, the only real guest we had was Scott Bayer who was there for the Eyes/Estimated combo. Scott was never there at a time where he could communicate with any of us except maybe Rich and this is a statement that can be made at anytime, whether playing music or not. Thankfully, I don’t even think he broke out his harmonica.

Kevin is giving us some indications that he may not be able to play the next couple of weeks due to the Bar Mitzvah of his son Dylan. We are going to have to remain flexible in order to keep the jamming moving forward. Bayside Mitch may be called into action if he is available.

We had a few big songs segments including an Eyes/Estimated and a surprising Help/Slip/Franklins. I thought Andy was done for the night and then he gave us the Help Slip Franklins. In addition, he played the final lead with of the Franklins with some ferocity that said, “I really don’t want to put my guitar down”. Rich made Andy play a Next Time You See Me before he was allowed to go.

When it was time for Andy to go, it was also time for Coffee to go. I think before Trsiter had his guitar off his shoulder Coffee-Boy was already in the elevator heading home. Actually, Kevin, Rich and I hung out for the last hour and played a few as a trio without any drumming. Some was good, some was bad, but it was music being made nevertheless. We did the Russian Lullaby, Dark Hollow, Wharf Rat and a Ripple in this format.

    Jam March 18, 2009 Carroll’s

    March 20, 2009 · 1 Comment

dcc_0243_edited-1This was a jam in Studio #3 at Carroll’s where we were planning on having a mini Bayside reunion with Alan on guitar and Coffee on drums.   Half way through the day Kevin had to bail on the jam so with our Bayside contingent already in place, it was easy, so it seems to add, Bayside Mitch as the 3rd Baysider.  It was Bayside-stein and it was a lot of fun.  So it was 6 of us in the big room but we were able to feel a little small at points.  Actually for a little at the beginning, we were 7 and for the most part it was a Deadstein first to jam with a horn player. Al brought his Luddite friend Howard the horn player to jam with us.  It was also fun.  Mitch played well and it was great that he was able to make it on such short notice.  It usually took him a few measures to get the groove but once it happened we made real music.  It was good I was able to lend him my book for most of the night.

We started the jam with a jam in E that I transitioned into Minglewood that worked well, but I made the mistake of setting up the PA thinking Howard was channel #2 when he was really #1 and I was #2, but the point being that I had my gain turned way down on my mic accidental and when I sang the Minglewood I blew my voice out for the rest of the night,  I paying for it today with a sore throat.  I spent some time showing Al some Shakedown things before we played and it turned out to be a pretty good song.

I thought Coffee and Scott really grooved well showing an extraordinarily amount of patience on some of the slow songs like the Simple Twist of Fate.  I hope we get the music because it was nice but I heard both Mitchell and Rich discussing issues with their recording setups.  Mitch was forgetting to hit record and Rich was hoping his batteries would last the jam.

    Jam 2008-12-23 Carroll’s

    February 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

2008-11-14_larryanddrummersDecember 23, 2008 at Carroll’s.  I was there, of course,  with the returning duo of Coffee and Trister followed by  Kevin, Scott, Rich.  I recall my brother Jay stopped by with his new girlfirend Andrea who I met for the first time that night. I sent them running with my rendition of a Looks Like Rain.  It probably really wasn’t too bad.  She and Jay came by my house for Christmas Day festivities a couple of days later.  It was all Chanuka if you recall.

2008-11-08_0586December 17, 2008 at Carroll’s and we attracted a big band.  This was Deadstein with guests, old and new.  First we had Trsiter on lead and he brought his buddy Halfstep Scott who was playing his newly acquired Bob Weir Ibanez. tree of life beauty.  In addition, Coffee came back for a week and so did Scott’s friend Andrew playing sax and flute.  He had a classic Jerry Garcia Songbook version 1 or 2.  Real retro. It was a big festival for everyone.  I also took a few videos so check them out as I post them.  The music is provided in the links below.

Larry, Scott, Coffee, Kevin, Trister, Scott from Halfstep and Andrew, Stu was a guest

I played a few songs with the Bob Weir guitar and it was really cool.  It wad a 3-channel EQ and was made with beautiful craftmanship.  It was quite the instrument.

    A happy bunch

    A happy bunch.

This looks like the big reunion jam with both Coffee and Trister joining us once again to jam and enjoy our good time with Michael, our old Albany alum.   We haven’t been together for quite a while and big things are predicted.
