Thursday night at Carroll’s and we were playing with the Bayside Boys, Mitchell and Alan who were sharing guitar responsibilities with me. Mitch had his newly acquired Gibson SG and Al was playing is semi-hollowbody Fern. I had my Strat, Kev had his Modulus, Scott had his drums and Rich had is Yamaha piano amplified with the non-PZM mic situated where we could close the piano lid on it. This not only made the piano sound better, but it also enabled use to keep our prized processions from sliding off the piano. Let us not forget Scott Bayer who was banging his bongos with gusto for a few songs. Where those things came from I don’t know. Scott wasn’t the only guest as we had Rob and Miriam who also stayed and partied and danced to our music. Miriam slipped me a Slim Jim since she was under the impression that I liked those things. Thanks Scott but I’ll leave it up to Rob to slip miriam the Slim Jims, Thank you very much. I’m just glad I took it out of my pocket before I went to bed last night or else I would have awoken to my dogs chewing a hole in my pocket trying to get to that Slim Jim.
Rich had a video shoot and was late by only a song. He missed the purposely easy to play first song, which I sang, but that was it. he was there for everything else. Kev, who is usually late on Thursday nights , made it there in virtually record time and beat me to the jam. We were in Studio #2 of Carroll’s following on the heals of Marshall Crenshaw who was rehearing in Studio #2 earlier in the day. While I have heard of Marshall, I have no idea who he is.
We used the iPhone quite a bit to select random songs for use to play, but I often selected the “goesinta” to following. This lead to a combo of I Know You Rider –> Hey Pocky Way and Crazy Fingers into Masterpiece. Most of those transitions were good and lead to some good playing. We had a pretty cool space jam in the Hey Pocky Way. The iPhone pushed us into a complete performed That’s It for the Other One Suite which was a nice surprise by the end of it. We ended the night with a Wake Up Little Suzie which we also did pretty well, getting through that songs in its entirety for what I recall to be the first time in decades. The iPhone told us to end the night at 11:53 with a closing Bertha, but that was rejected and ended with the good feelings the Suzie provided us. Other songs we rejected were I Wash My Hands and Oakie From Muskogie but listening to them in the PA system when the iPhone selects them was a nice feeling. Other gems were West LA Fadeaway, Looks Like Rain and few 1-4-5 songs like Johnny B. Goode and Promised Land. The rest of the setlist will arrive when Rich posts the MP3s. Until then, I await our next get together is currently tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday.

Well, this was a first for me in almost 20 years. Car troubles stopped me from making the jam. It’s hard to believe considering I’ve never had good cars but it’s true. I packed my trunk, turned the key and nothing, it was all over, no way of making the jam. It also looks like the end of Jetta cam, unless I do get another Jetta which seems unlikely at this point. I greatly apologize for missing the jam but I hope it was a worthwhile experience for all that made it. Scott filled me in a bit today while I was at lunch and it sounds like it was a nice night. Let me know what happened and see you next week.

It was a Monday night in Carroll’s for another Baysidestein type of night. We were in the cozy Studio #2 and Chris from Carroll’s was there early to make sure everything was okay. Well at the time standing around the piano everything was okay, if you know what I mean, but as soon as we started to plug-in and chug along, a lot needed fixing. I was having cable issues and played direct all night. Kevin sounded like he blew a speaker, he blew a battery and Bayside Mitch couldn’t get his Martin to play, that was all worked out in the end.
We were a six man band including Bayside Al on guitar and Bayside Russell on drums. We had lots of fun and sounded good through the night. The only guest that I recall was Scott Bayer and he didn’t bring his harmonica this week.
I hope Rich will be able to post the song but I recall playing the following, Feel Like a Stranger, Simple Twist of Fate, Around and Around, Wharf Rat, Looks Like Rain. There was an Eyes of the World where I was playing drums and Russ was playing Mitch’s acoustic. There was Scott’s soulful Box of Rain where he was able to sing while letting Russell play drums alone.

I don’t recall that we played many songs and we took many breaks. I brought in a bottle of wine and I thank Kevin for the cork screw and cups. That helped. For the record it was a jt cellars 2006 petite sirah out of lodi, CA. I hadn’t had a petite sirah since my trip to Napa 15 years ago and I remembered I liked it then and I enjoyed it last night. It was fruity and easy to drink. Bold and purple. If anyone wants to keep up with wine drinking you can follow it on my wine blog at http://lgwine.wordpress.com. In addition, I also brought in my preponderance of the candy and almonds. The almonds are going quickly these days. Maybe a little prune juice, cottage cheese and toast will be good for next jam.

This was a jam in Studio #3 at Carroll’s where we were planning on having a mini Bayside reunion with Alan on guitar and Coffee on drums. Half way through the day Kevin had to bail on the jam so with our Bayside contingent already in place, it was easy, so it seems to add, Bayside Mitch as the 3rd Baysider. It was Bayside-stein and it was a lot of fun. So it was 6 of us in the big room but we were able to feel a little small at points. Actually for a little at the beginning, we were 7 and for the most part it was a Deadstein first to jam with a horn player. Al brought his Luddite friend Howard the horn player to jam with us. It was also fun. Mitch played well and it was great that he was able to make it on such short notice. It usually took him a few measures to get the groove but once it happened we made real music. It was good I was able to lend him my book for most of the night.

We started the jam with a jam in E that I transitioned into Minglewood that worked well, but I made the mistake of setting up the PA thinking Howard was channel #2 when he was really #1 and I was #2, but the point being that I had my gain turned way down on my mic accidental and when I sang the Minglewood I blew my voice out for the rest of the night, I paying for it today with a sore throat. I spent some time showing Al some Shakedown things before we played and it turned out to be a pretty good song.
I thought Coffee and Scott really grooved well showing an extraordinarily amount of patience on some of the slow songs like the Simple Twist of Fate. I hope we get the music because it was nice but I heard both Mitchell and Rich discussing issues with their recording setups. Mitch was forgetting to hit record and Rich was hoping his batteries would last the jam.

You can find this weeks music in MP3 format at the following link or just put your cursor over the song links below and use WordPress’ built in streaming music player. Thanks to Rich for recording and posting these files.
